With Buffalo Springfield Revisited Colorado Takes Notice of One of it’s Own

During the Buffalo Springfield Reunion tour hiatus, Jeremy P. Meyer, of the Denver Post, took some time to catch up with Richie Furay. In a very candid and insightful article we get a snippet of Richie’s history spanning the past, present and a bit of the future. Richie is still trying to get settled back into the swing of normalcy again in Broomfield, CO after the epic Springfield trial run. The interview took place during an RFB rehearsal leading up to the band’s show at the Bluebird Theater.

Richie Furay could be the forgotten rock-’n'- roll pioneer.

The 67-year-old Broomfield pastor has roots deep in the annals of rock music — he is the co-founder of the seminal 1960s band Buffalo Springfield and is regarded as an architect of a genre that dominated the radio in the early 1970s.

But aside from rock historians and music geeks, few people know anything about Furay, whose own band has trouble booking shows in Colorado.

Inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, Furay doesn’t like to play up his accolades.

“Put me on the river, put me on the golf course, put me on the stage — I’m having fun,” he said recently, sitting in the office of his small church.

Furay’s relative anonymity is already changing, thanks to the reunion of Buffalo Springfield, the group he formed in 1966 with Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Bruce Palmer.

Extended US Tour Slated for the Buffalo Springfield

The Buffalo Springfield Rides Again

Looks like many of the fans who keep asking for the Buffalo Springfield to come to a city near them may just get their wish. The dates have not been published as of yet but there are plans in the works for a tour of somewhere near 30 shows starting at the end of the summer.

The first shows of the initial warm-up tour were earlier this week in Oakland and the band goes on tonight in LA for the first of two shows, followed by two in Santa Barbara. This initial historic tour closes out next weekend at Bonnaroo.

Look for tickets and plan ahead for a full tour starting in September.

A Good Feelin’ To Know Producer Jack Richardson Passes Away

Some sad news reached me today. A few days ago Jack Richardson passed away, he was 81 years old. I really enjoyed working with Jack. Not only was Jack one of the most talented record producers ever, he was also one of the nicest men you would ever meet. We had many great sessions together, some of my most memorable times in the studio. He was a professional who knew how to have fun in the studio while never forgetting the reason we were there.

In my opinion, what he and his partner Bob Ezrin did with Crazy Eyes was nothing short of brilliant. It was a pleasure to meet, know and work with Jack.

Telluride Tells Buffalo Springfield to Ride on by

Colorado Music Hall of Fame Induction Benefit Concert

The Colorado Music Hall of Fame held is first annual induction concert on April 21st at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield Colorado. This first inductees included Colorado pop/folk legend John Denver, as well as the Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Richie Furay, accompanied by Scott Sellen, Jesse Furay Lynch, John Denver’s band and the Boulder Philharmonic, led off the benefit concert. Here’s a raw video of Richie, Scott and Jesse seeing Wild Montana Skies which was originally recorded by John Denver with Emmylou Harris in 1983.

With all the excitement being generated around the forthcoming Bonnaroo Festival and the Buffalo Springfield Tour, the Richie Furay Band took an evening out to show off their chops. In this local Colorado gig we were able to come away with a couple of songs on video.

In the first clip the band performs Crazy Eyes, the stirring piece that Richie wrote about his lost friend Gram Parsons.

In this clip Jesse Lynch sings Baby Why. This song was recorded by Jesse in Nashville and is currently being mixed in the studio.

Buffalo Springfield Tour Slated for September

Since the world is already talking about it, I guess it’s alright if we do now. Since the historic reunion of the Buffalo Springfield for Neil Young’s Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert this past October, something has been in the works for the hall of fame trio along with Joe Vitale and Rick Rosas to embark on a reunion tour. There is no word yet on a rehearsal or tour schedule so there is still a chance that things could fail to materialize, but this time around there seems to be larger forces at work driving things forward and only the Lord knows for what ultimate purpose.

David Crosby who sat in with the Springfield at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 dishes some news from Stephen’s camp in this Rolling Stone article:

“I think he is excited,” Crosby says of CSN bandmate Stephen Stills. “And I’ve got to tell you, I didn’t get to see them live, but I watched clips and Richie [Furay]- I got to tell you man, he is so happy onstage and is such a joyful energy.”

Dan Hughes and Richie’s Paths Cross for a Reason

Ken Rodriguez wrote a really neat article about Dan Hughes and his return to coaching and how his and Richie’s lives crossed paths along the way; here is a snippet from the article:

Dan Hughes was sitting down for a slice of rock ‘n roll heaven – lunch with Richie Furay, founding member of the 1960s band, Buffalo Springfield – when he was hit with the unexpected.

“So Dan,” Richie began, “are you going to coach again?”

Dan was in Mountain View, Calif, to watch an historic reunion of Buffalo Springfield in October, to listen to Furay, Neil Young and Stephen Stills jam at the Shoreline Amphitheater before 20,000 fans.

”Stop, hey, what’s that sound, everybody look what’s goin’ down.”

The classic song, “For What It’s Worth,” Dan knew by heart. The band, well, he’d been a fan forever. Now here he was, on the day of the big show, about to break bread with a member of the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, and the first words spoken were about his future.

After 33 years in coaching, Dan had relinquished his role as Silver Stars head coach in 2010 to become full-time general manager. It was a bit odd, he admitted, not working the sidelines on game day. But coach again?

The Buffalo Springfield Rides Again

Some said the Buffalo Springfield would never again share a stage together but it happened for the right reason at the right moment in time. The Bridge School annual Benefit Concert, which is organized and hosted by Pegi and Neil Young, is such a blessing for so many special needs children and their families for whom simple activities often require such strength, courage and faith. I was so enamored by both the joy of the kids and by their parents, both of whom this concert was put on for to raise funds and awareness. As far as the music goes there was a whole lot of talent gathered for the Bridge School Concert this year as there always is and it certainly lived up to it’s billing.

The reason we were blessed enough to be able to tag along on this historical weekend was of course for the long-awaited re-herding of the Buffalo. Our part on this event was as three little flies on the wall.

The weekend began with a dinner party at Pegi and Neil’s ranch which was quite a surreal experience. We traveled in a cavalcade of black Cadillac Escalades with Stephen in one, Joe and Rick in one, and Richie (and family) in another. After about an hour and a half drive, meandering through redwood filled hills on single lane roads sans guard rails, the redwood trees gave way to a clearing; the ranch. Walking up to the house on a brick pathway with hearts on it, we assumed the hearts were representative of the “Heart of Gold”, and this type of attention to detail carried on all throughout the uniquely amazing home. Our hostess, Pegi Young greeted us warmly and baby Brooklyn was a big hit. It was a really fun evening and we met some really neat people like Joe Vitale, man what a neat guy he is. Rubbing shoulders with stars like Neil and Stephen, Billy Idol, the members of Grizzly Bear, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams was a bit intimidating for us and we really just tried to enjoy the evening and try to take it all in.

The next two evenings of history-making music will be talked about for a long time from now. We had a blast backstage as well as out in the crowd experiencing the excitement of the crowd eagerly awaiting the Springfield’s on-stage reunion. When those three voices came together again in a chorus of Ooh, ooh, ooh’s you could literally hear a hush come across the crowd as if everyone there stopped for a moment and thought, “Is it really happening?”. When the words “When the dream came…” escaped from Richie’s mouth the moment had arrived and like with any good thing we can only ask for more. Hopefully we will all get some more…soon!
